Child Dies After “Likely Accidental” Shooting on Indy’s North Side
INDIANAPOLIS — A child has died from from a shooting Thursday that police say was “likely accidental.”
IMPD officers responded to a CVS near the intersection of 46th Street and Keystone Avenue on the north side of Indianapolis just before 3 p.m. There, they found a juvenile male lying outside of a car with a gunshot wound.
The toddler was treated by officers at the scene before being transported to Riley Children’s Hospital in critical condition. IMPD confirmed that the child died at the hospital just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
Sgt. William Young told reporters at the scene that the the shooting may have been self-inflicted.
“This is very heart wrenching whenever our officers or community have to respond to a person shot, let alone a juvenile or a child,” he said.
Officer Young also said that police are not currently looking for a suspect. IMPD officials believe this was an isolated incident and all parties involved are accounted for.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the child as 2-year-old Javarius Bickett.
“If you have a firearm, you are responsible for that firearm,” Young added. “You are responsible for being a safe gun owner.”
The Marion County Coroner’s Office will ultimately determine the cause of death.
