INDIANA– The toll road conversation continues with The Braun Administration.

The state is continuing to explore the possibility of introducing new tolls on Indiana’s interstate highway system, a move prompted by the steady decline in revenue from the state’s gas tax—a primary funding source for road maintenance.

This consideration comes as Indiana faces an estimated annual shortfall of $600 to $800 million needed simply to maintain the current condition of its state roads. A legislative road funding task force recently highlighted this substantial funding deficit.

While the Governor was granted the authority to implement tolling on roads by the Indiana General Assembly back in 2017, recent legislative changes have introduced new procedural steps. A new house act requires the Governor to obtain federal waivers if new tolling facilities are to be established within 75 miles of an existing toll road.

Officials project that even if the necessary federal approvals are secured, it could take an additional four to five years before any new tolling facilities are operational and Hoosiers begin to see them on the roads.
