MOORESVILLE, Ind. — Mooresville police say they’re adding the PIT maneuver to their list of tools to stop drivers who take off during chases.

Chief Kerry Buckner says the decision to begin training officers in the technique was made well before last weekend’s close call involving one of his officers.

“Actually, you’re making minimal contact with the vehicle, and all it does is throw the vehicle off its axis to stop the pursuit,” said Buckner.

Over the weekend, Officer Chase Pitcock was nearly hit head-on while setting up stop sticks during a chase involving a black Dodge Charger. Body camera video shows the driver veering toward him, forcing Pitcock to jump out of the way.

“The car found a small area to turn off of State Road 67 and when they did Officer Pitcock had to move very quickly to avoid getting hit head-on.”

Pitcock is recovering from minor injuries. Buckner says the PIT maneuver will supplement what officers already use in the field and adds that while the training isn’t cheap, it’s worth the investment.

The suspect in that case is still on the run. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office at 765-342-5544 or Mooresville Police at 317-831-3434.
