MARION, Ind.–There was a shooting in Marion on Sunday and one man is dead.

Just after 4:30 pm, State Police say members of the Marion Police Department, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, and the Indiana State Police responded to a home on South Washington Street because they were told that a man had a knife and “sustained a self-inflicted injury.”

After they got there, they say they found 56-year-old Derick P. Morgan of Marion armed with a knife and bleeding from his neck. Officers say they tried talking to Morgan, but he charged at the Marion Police Officer resulting in the deputy firing his gun and striking Morgan at least once.

“Despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Morgan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said a Sunday night news release from State Police.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for situations like this.

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be submitted to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office to be reviewed.
