Elon Musk has alleged that the cyberattack that hit his social media platform X had digital traces originating in Ukraine.
The leader of the controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) told Larry Kudlow in an interview that a “massive cyber attack” linked to Ukrainian IP addresses was behind the widespread outages of his social media site.
“We’re not sure exactly what happened,” Musk told Fox Business Network host Larry Kudlow about the apparent operation targeting his social media platform.
“But there was a massive cyber attack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area,” Musk claimed.
The attack, which began early Monday, led to widespread outages across Asia, Europe, and North America. According to Downdetector, a site that tracks service disruptions, users reported being unable to access X for extended periods.
However, cybersecurity experts caution that attributing an attack based on IP addresses alone is unreliable, as attackers can easily mask their locations. Cybercriminals have been known to create false IP addresses to impersonate computer systems from different parts of the world, a practice known as “spoofing.”
Thousands of social media users reported outages on X throughout the day on Monday.
Reports started pouring in at 6 a.m., according to DownDetector.com, with more than 40,000 users claiming issues with the platform by 10 a.m.
Another 25,000 users had encountered problems on the X app as of Monday afternoon, according to the crash-tracking site.
