ELKHART, Ind. — Gunshots were heard at a grocery store in Elkhart. The end result: three people are dead and two police officers were wounded.
The shooting happened in the parking lot of a Martin’s Super Market Monday evening. Police got the call about shots fired at the store at around 5:30. They converged on the scene and were confronted by a man with a gun.
Police officers exchanged gunfire with the man in the parking lot of the store. It was during the melee that the two officers were hit, but the man was also wounded by the officers. Once they had control Jessica McBrier, public information officer for Elkhart police, says they assessed the situation.
“There was a shooting situation inside the Martin’s (before police arrived),” McBrier said. “Two individuals were pronounced deceased inside. The suspect in this incident is also deceased. We’re investigating, but it is no longer an active scene and there is no danger to the public at this time.”
The two officers who were wounded were quickly taken to a nearby hospital. One of the officers has since been treated and released while the other is in good condition but still being treated for their injuries.
“Our hearts are broken in Elkhart tonight,” said Mayor Rob Roberson said in an emailed statement. “Please continue to pray for the victims including our two police officers who were wounded, our heroic first responders, and those at the incident.”
