Single-Digit Temps and Snow

INDIANAPOLIS— Expect wind chills near zero and light snow overnight Wednesday, with temperatures struggling to climb out of the single digits. More than 70 schools across Central Indiana started the day with delays.

Temps may rise to the 30s and 40s over the next few days but don’t get too comfortable—by Monday, the high will barely reach 10, with subzero wind chills expected.

“You want to limit your exposure to these temperatures,” said Joe Nield, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “It just does not take long for frostbite to occur. You can easily suffer the effects of exposure after a relatively short time.”

Frostbite can make your skin feel numb, tingly, or look pale and waxy. It usually starts with your fingers, toes, or nose. If not treated right away, it can cause lasting damage. Nield says that even if you’re bundled up, prolonged exposure to the cold can still lead to other health issues.

“You go out from a heated space and into this really cold air, and it just burns almost in your lungs, trying to breathe in these really cold temperatures,” he said.

Snow is expected to start Thursday night and continue into Thursday morning, mainly in the northeast half of central Indiana. Up to half an inch of snow could fall, especially along and northeast of I-74.
