INDIANAPOLIS — A fire injured one person Thursday morning on the west side of Indianapolis.
Wayne Township Fire crews arrived at a home in the 2800 block of Mars Hill St. around 6:11 a.m. after getting a fire alarm and reports of someone trapped. The neighborhood near Troy Avenue.
“When firefighters approached the front door, they heard someone coughing,” said Wayne Township Fire Captain Eric Banister. “They immediately entered the home and found an elderly woman on the couch, disoriented. They pulled her to safety.”
Banister said the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. Three people were inside the home, and crews rescued the disoriented woman. Two others and two dogs escaped safely.
“If you’re in a residence with rising carbon monoxide and lowering oxygen levels, you have anywhere from 4 to 8 minutes before losing consciousness,” Banister said. “If the brain is deprived of oxygen for much longer, you risk not surviving.”
