SOUTH BEND, IND. – A firefighter lost his home and belongings in a fire Sunday.
South Bend Firefighters Local 362 launched a fundraiser to support Colin Kowalski after he learned his home had caught fire following a 24-hour shift.
“I was at my fire station,” Kowalski said. “I work up in South Bend; I live in Plymouth; it’s about a half-hour drive. I get woken up to a call that I must go home.”
Kowalski’s wife, Abbi, and their two children are safe, but the fire destroyed their home and everything inside. The union reported Kowalski recently discovered a missed insurance payment had canceled his policy.
Kowalski said his family is staying with his parents as they begin rebuilding.
“I’m thankful for that,” he added.
