JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind..–Three kids were identified as playing a role in the throwing of rocks and baseballs onto I-65 in Johnson County last month.
The Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess believes the balls were stolen from a local little league organization in Franklin and that was what led officers to identify and interview the three kids.
Police say the case is now in the hands of the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office for consideration of potential charges. No other statements will be made until the Prosecutor’s Office reviews the case.
“This was a troubling incident that caused property damage and could have led to serious injuries. We were very fortunate that no one was hurt. The swift and thorough work of our team demonstrates the dedication of our officers to ensuring public safety and holding those responsible accountable,” said Burgess.
The first incident occurred on November 9, 2024, at approximately 9:15 PM. Burgess says a deputy responded to a report of individuals throwing items off an overpass, discovering a large quantity of baseballs on the roadway that were removed to ensure driver safety.
The second incident occurred on November 25, 2024, at approximately 6:45 PM, when the Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of individuals throwing rocks from the overpass at County Roads 250 S and 600 E onto I-65. Multiple 911 calls were received, including one from a tractor-trailer driver who reported that his vehicle had been damaged.
