MUNCIE, Ind. — Ball State University has fired its head football coach Mike Neu after nearly nine seasons leading the Cardinals.

Neu, who was hired in 2016, had posted a record of 40-63. He led the Cardinals to just one winning season in his time as head coach. In 2020, the Cardinals were 7-1, won the MAC championship, and qualified for the Arizona Bowl.

In 2021 the Cards followed that up with a 6-7 season in which they went to the Camellia Bowl.

Since then Ball State has struggled to attain bowl eligibility having gone 5-7 in 2022, 4-8 in 2023, and so far 3-7 this season.

Neu leaves Ball State tied as the second-winningest coach in school history with 40 wins, along with Dwight Wallace (’78-’84). Ball State has not said what the timeline is for finding a new head coach.

“Coach Neu has poured his heart into the Ball State football program,” Ball State Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell said in a press release. “I commend him for his professionalism and the positive team culture he has constructed. His efforts have greatly impacted the lives of hundreds of young men. He has represented the Ball State brand with integrity and class, and I wish him well in future pursuits.”

The Cardinals are on a bye week and are expected to continue the 2024 season next Saturday against Bowling Green in their final home game. They close out the season Saturday, Nov. 29 against Ohio.
