Indianapolis Man Who Lied About Fake App Convicted for Fraud
INDIANAPOLIS — A man from Indy has been convicted for fraud, after he scammed investors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars for a fake social media app he said he was designing.
Court papers say David Betner told people that his app, Darepoint, was going to be purchased by Facebook for hundreds of millions of dollars. He received more than $383,000 from his investors, and then used that money for personal use.
His investors also weren’t aware of Betner’s criminal history, which included prior convictions for forgery and theft.
Betner pled guilty to six counts of fraud, one count of corrupt business influence, and one count of check deception.
He’s been ordered to pay that money back to seven individuals, and he could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison. His sentencing will be in January.
