Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking a stand. The governor announced Wednesday that Florida’s education curriculum will exclude critical race theory.
DeSantis announced “Civic Literacy Excellence Initiative,” a plan that would direct the Florida Department of Education to create a state civics seal. The plan would use $106 million of the federal coronavirus relief funds for schools.
This initiative will partner up the education department with national leaders in civics professional development to provide a “series of modules and micro-credentials that any Florida teacher will be eligible to attain.”
DeSantis made it abundantly clear that the civics education and training programs will not include any form of critical race theory.
“Florida Civics curriculum will corporate foundational concepts with the best materials. And it will expressly exclude unsanctioned narratives like critical race theory and other unsubstantiated theories.”
He asks lawmakers to take the proposal up ASAP.
“Let me be clear, there is no room in our classrooms for things like critical race theory. Teaching kids to hate their country and to hate each other is not worth one red cent of tax payer money.”
Teachers who complete the civics training would receive a $3,000 bonus under the governor’s plan.
Tony Katz only hopes Governor Holcomb follows suite.
“This is absolutely the right move. This is the fight. Now is the time to be brave.”
