Gov. Mike Braun stopped by the Hammer and Nigel studio to talk earnestly about if the state needs to get involved in solving the crime and violence problem in the capital city.

After the mass shooting Fourth of July weekend, killing two teenagers and injuring five others, there has been an outpour of concern for the safety of downtown. The Hammer and Nigel show have spoken to IMPD Chief Bailey, FOP Rick Snyder, and other leaders in the community on how the city needs to better support officers and children.

Hammer and Nigel asked Governor Braun about his stance on the state’s interest in stepping in. Mayor Hogsett and Prosecutor Mears have told local news that gun laws are the issue.

“He (Mears) blames it (violence) on not having stronger gun laws. I blame it on prosecutors that aren’t prosecuting with the laws we got in place… so when law enforcement is asking for help, we’re going to give it.”

The governor notes that while he is more than willing to help IMPD officers, loaning out state police every weekend is not the long-term solution.

“If we got to be here every weekend, that means something more significant needs to be done.”
