INDIANAPOLIS–The TenPoint Coalition plans to have a presence in Indianapolis all throughout the weekend, but especially on Saturday night with the WNBA All-Star game and the Indiana Black Expo taking place.

The coalition is a volunteer group who’s mission is to reduce violent crime in Indianapolis. They patrol what’s known as “hot spot areas”, areas known for where shootings and other crimes are known to happen.

At a news conference Thursday morning, TenPoint Coalition Board President Charles Harrison said you can expect to see several of his patrol teams in Indianapolis to help keep the peace. Harrison is a senior pastor at the Barnes United Methodist Church. He recently had a conversation with his wife.

“I just talked with her and thought maybe we could do more to help out the city,” said Harrison.

He says his goal is to make sure downtown Indianapolis is “a safe environment for all.”

“We may have anywhere from 40 to 70 individuals downtown to help out,” said Harrison.

Chris Bailey, Chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, was also at the news conference. He says people like the TenPoint Coalition set a great example for kids to follow.

“They need you to be a guiding light for them to show them the right way to do things. Thank you for being that light,” said Bailey.

The WNBA All-Star Game tips off at 8:30 pm Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Indiana Black Expo’s 54th Annual Summer Celebration started July 17 and it finishes on July 20.
