INDIANAPOLIS–One man died in a crash that happened early Thursday morning on the southwest side of Indianapolis.

It happened at around 2 am on I-465 southbound near the Sam Jones Expressway involving a motorcycle and a 2008 Honda Civic.

“Preliminary calls indicated a car had struck the concrete median barrier and was in the roadway, then calls started coming in about a motorcycle that had struck the car and the rider was unresponsive. When first responders arrived the found the motorcycle rider lying on the ground unconscious. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the car was out of the vehicle and only suffered minor injuries,” said State Police Sergeant John Perrine.

Perrine says the Honda Civic driver made an evasive turn to get out of the exit lane and back onto the main line of I-465, lost control, and eventually hit the barrier. The motorcycle driver was thrown off it after hitting the Honda.

“The driver of the Honda Civic, 24-year-old Edward Perez of Indianapolis, was arrested for operating while intoxicated,” said Perrine.

The southbound lanes of I-465 were restricted for crash investigation for nearly five hours. The scene was finally cleared around 7 am.

“These investigations are complex and we only get one shot at it, so it takes us a little bit of time to get every detail documented. That has to happen and that was the reason for the closure,” said Perrine.

The circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.
