STATEWIDE — Summer has just started, and extremely hot temperatures touched down in Indiana, expected to continue throughout the work week.

Alexander McGinnis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, says a heat advisory has been sent out for much of the state.

“For most of the state, widespread low to mid 90s are expected for high temperatures,” McGinnis says.

He adds that is expected to happen all the way through at least Thursday.

“Heat index values will probably be getting near or a little bit above 100 degrees,” McGinnis says.

McGinnis also says that an excessive heat wave will be in effect late in the work week.

“When you have a heat advisory or an extreme heat warning, concerns will certainly be heat exhaustion,” McGinnis says. “When you get dizzy, thirsty, sweaty, nauseated, or weak, you would want to prevent that from happening. You would want to move into a cooler area, wear appropriate clothing, and hydrate earlier in the day.”

McGinnis also advises trying to find a way to cool off every night.

“Try to get the air conditioning working,” McGinnis says. “If you are unable to cool off at night or day after day, that’s where you can have medical health problems.”

McGinnis says there will be a few showers and thunderstorms starting Tuesday.

“That might at least help the temperature fall back into the upper 80s a little bit,” McGinnis added.

McGinnis says if you have work outside to be done, it’s better to do it in the morning rather than in the afternoon because temperatures will be much higher.
