MARSHALL, Ind. — A West Michigan man drowned while trying to rescue a girl who was struggling in a West Indiana creek.

Indiana Conservation Officers say the incident happened Friday evening at Sugar Creek in Turkey Run State Park. Witnesses said a man was trying to help a girl who was struggling in the water. Unfortunately, he was overtaken by the current, got swept downstream into rocks and debris and did not resurface.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources identified the man as 56-year-old Maximo Disla-Garcia, of Wyoming, Michigan. His body was recovered later in the evening. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

The Parke County Coroner’s Office pronounced Disla-Garcia dead at the scene. An autopsy confirmed his death as an accidental drowning.

The girl was able to save herself and was unharmed.
