Indiana Rep. Baird Backs GOP Plan to Extend Tax Cuts, Cut SNAP

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Jim Baird of Indiana is backing a major House Republican bill that would extend Trump-era tax cuts and increase federal spending on the military, border security, and fossil fuels, while making deep cuts to social safety net programs.
“If we do not get this bill over the finish line, over 62 percent of the tax filers will face substantial tax increases,” said Baird, who represents Indiana’s 4th Congressional District. “This bill will also allow us to support our farmers, producers, and ensure rural Americans can survive.”
The House Agriculture Committee, where Baird is a member, met Tuesday to consider its part of the broader bill. That portion includes changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that would tighten eligibility rules, block future increases in monthly benefits, and require states to pick up more of the cost.
To help pay for the expanded spending, the plan includes cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, student loan relief, and green energy programs.
“I am excited that we are getting the federal spending back on track,” Baird added.
House Republicans have tasked the Agriculture Committee with identifying at least $230 billion in savings. The committee says the goal is to return SNAP to its “original intent” and encourage “work, not welfare.” A vote on the bill is expected soon.
