Property Tax Bill Keeps Getting Discussed, Amended at Statehouse
STATEHOUSE–You will likely get some relief from property taxes, but not in the form promised by Gov. Mike Braun. His original bill (SB1) has been changed many times, with some 25 amendments discussed so far.
The bill was amended several times Monday morning during a discussion in the House Ways and Means Committee, passing out of that committee 15-8, to go back to the Senate.
One of the amendments will provide a 7.5 percent tax credit on Homestead property taxes up to $200.
It also provides for credits for senior citizens and disabled veterans.
It also would provide a two thirds property tax deduction for homeowners by 2031.
Braun said two weeks ago that he could live with getting two thirds of what he originally wanted and believed the General Assembly would provide him with that to sign. It is not yet clear from Braun if the amendments passed so far are in line with what agreeable to him.
He had championed a reset of property taxes back to their 2021 levels.
