It is improper to see the last month as very quiet on the military side. There’s clearly a tremendous amount happening. Major Mike Lyons joins Tony Katz Today to talk about President Trump’s DEI cuts in the military, how the military will handle Israel/Hamas, and Russia/Ukraine with Trump.

Tony Katz:

You’re seeing the total disruption, I should say elimination of DEI. This is massive. So, to the extent that you can talk about it, two things. How did you see it creep in and exactly what’s getting ripped out?

Mike Lyons:

It’s probably been part of the military academies all, all of them, not just the past four years, but going back to the Obama administration, going back to 20, you know, probably 2014 as they decided to open up complete offices within the superintendents. The office in each of the military academies, I know they had one at West Point. And like anything else, over time it evolves. It starts out with one or two people looking at a few things and then next thing you know, it grows to being not a profit center. It’s a complete cost center, but more resources are allocated to it. And I would say. And then in the classic road to hell paved with good intentions back then

Tony Katz:

What is the take on Hegseth within the academies? Your take?

Mike Lyons:

He’s smart and he clearly has the president’s intent. He’s going to execute on that fully and he’s surrounding himself with some smart people. I like what he said initially about he knows what he knows, and he knows what he doesn’t know. That’s one of my leadership tenants that I try to live my life by. He’s going to make mistakes, I’m sure, but I’d say so far so good as he’s communicated openly. The transparency is again, pretty incredible. You saw how the Department of Defense acted with the (Blackhawk) helicopter crash.

Tony Katz:

Let’s bring it into a state of the world, if you will. Certainly, you’ve got President Trump’s recent comments about Hamas as you see these Israelis being returned looking in President Trump’s words, and they weren’t just his… Words like Holocaust survivors, gaunt, pale, beyond thin, incredibly weak. You’re hearing stories of torture, of suffocation, of starvation, being hung upside down by their legs for days at a time, if not longer. Psychological warfare…. And then you heard President Trump say that we will take ownership of Gaza, meaning ownership of a rebuilding of Gaza. People will get resettled, and that’s the way it goes. Now, that’s a political question. I would rather get into the military question. Is there a thought process to what happens if President Trump feels that Hamas is not releasing hostages fast enough?

Mike Lyons:

You’re not going to see any U.S. soldier on the ground. I don’t think you’ll see, let’s say it gets to the point where we’re trying to help Gaza rebuild. I still don’t see the military being involved with that. And frankly, I think that that security is going to have to be provided 100% by the Israelis. There’s no military mission that exists there now. But take a step further back from that. What President Trump has brought back to the United States from a strategic perspective, it’s just this concept of deterrence and that is what has returned completely.

Major Mike Lyons also talks about what he expects to happen with the war in Ukraine. Please listen to the discussion in full here:
