Rick Snyder Press Conference

INDIANAPOLIS — You may have heard calls for local police departments to enforce federal immigration policies. Indy FOP President Rick Snyder says this is not a good idea.

At a news conference Friday, Snyder explained that local officers are already “understaffed, overworked, and over-burdened.”

He also agreed with Indy Metro Police Chief Chris Bailey, who recently spoke against asking local officers to enforce these policies. While Bailey’s comments might have led you to believe that he is trying to make Indianapolis a “sanctuary city,” Snyder emphasized that the opposite is true.

During the conference, Snyder even noted how political policing has become. He argued that law enforcement is “probably hitting the mark” when both right- and left-leaning Hoosiers are angry.

Ultimately, the FOP President believes more federal responsibilities for local police will make smaller communities less safe. For example, undocumented people in violent relationships or who are being sexually abused might continue being victimized in order to spare themselves from deportation.

Instead, officers should focus on their own communities, and just collaborate with other departments when needed. See Snyder’s address and learn more here.
