State Police: Nearly 200 Crashes Between 3 pm Monday and 6 am Tuesday in Indianapolis Alone

STATEWIDE–Between 3 pm Monday and 6 am Tuesday, there were 168 crashes just in Indianapolis alone. State Police Sergeant John Perrine says there were likely more than that the further you went in central Indiana.
Roads were slick, but Perrine emphasized that that is no excuse.
“There may have been around 200 people that crashed. But we had tens of thousands of people that didn’t crash. It’s hard to put blame on the roads for all these crashes. It’s the way that people are driving on the roads that are causing these crashes,” said Perrine.
Perrine says the silver lining is that no one was hurt or killed in these crashes.
“People who have all wheel drive in their vehicles sometimes get a false sense of security and safety. They think they can drive their normal speed and that’s simply not true when it’s really icy out,” said Perrine.
He is also urging you to practice patience when you drive even when it’s difficult.
“Maybe the car in front of you isn’t as comfortable as you driving on slick roads so they want to go a little slower. Then you start tailgating. That tailgating leads to other hazards, and eventually a crash,” said Perrine.
Ice is often a big equalizer.
“It’s something you don’t really have equipment for. All wheel drive or four wheel drive don’t help you when the roads are too icy and it certainly doesn’t help you when you go too fast,” said Perrine.
Some light snow is possible again on Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Indianapolis says you need to be prepared for slick roads the rest of the week.
