DELPHI, IND — The latest court filing in the Delphi murders case seeks to prevent prison guards from testifying. Richard Allen is charged with murdering Abby Williams and Libby German, and prosecutors say he has confessed to the killings 61 times.

Allen has been in custody since Indiana State Police announced his arrest in October 2022. He has spent considerable time in “the hole,” or solitary confinement, which his attorneys argue has caused mental breakdowns and should render his confessions unusable in his defense.

Allen’s legal team also says that prison guards lack the necessary expertise to assess his condition and that their testimony violates a court rule regarding expert witnesses.

The trial begins with jury selection on Monday in Allen County. After being selected, jurors will be transported to Carroll County for the proceedings.

According to multiple media reports, the month-long trial will cost taxpayers several million dollars.
