STATEWIDE — It may surprise you to know that more than one million cars were stolen in the United States last year. So, the Indiana BMV is urging you to keep your vehicle safe.

The organization says you can “safeguard” your mode of transportation by:

  1. Parking in well-lit areas.
  2. Closing and locking all windows and doors before you leave.
  3. Hiding all valuable items.

You can also employ other tools and/or safety features, such as a steering wheel lock. You may remember when IMPD freely gave some of these locks to Hyundai and Kia owners.

Consumer Affairs says states like California, Washington, and Colorado often record the most vehicle thefts. Data also indicates that, in the Hoosier state, more than 12,000 vehicles were stolen in 2021.
