It’s getting cold out and the excitement of outdoor home care has worn off. Before you shut that shed, close that closet, or shove your tools in the corner of the garage here are four things to check up on one last time for the year. These four things are not just simple, but will be more beneficial than you’d think.
Fertilize
It’s not too late to put down that last layer of fall fertilizer down. Fertilizing will help keep your lawn green into winter and help the roots of the grass to get ready to survive hard temperatures. Be sure to mulch any beds you may have or perennials to keep them safe as well. You can even use compost like chopped up leaves as a substitute.
Clean Gutters
You may roll your eyes as you read this one. Cleaning gutters is always at the bottom of any “to-do” list, but before the snow and ice really come it’s best to do it now. We all know water can do major damage to any buildings foundation which is why making sure water is going away from your home is so important. You also want to make sure your gutters last. Cleaning the gutters will prevent any gutter board rot, which can get expensive quick.
Inspect the Exterior of the House
Critters are starting to look for a nice warm place for the winter, don’t let that be your home. Take a quick stroll around the house and plug up any holes or small open areas. It’s easier to prevent mice and others from coming in then it is to get them out.
Unhook the Hose
The easiest thing on the list! Unhook your hose to avoid it freezing over the winter and breaking. For extra protection, place a cap over the spout.
Just like that you are ready for an Indiana winter. Well, your house is anyway!
