UPDATE: IMPD Officer Shot, Three Suspects Arrested, One is At Large

INDIANAPOLIS–An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer was shot at least three times in a confrontation on the west side of Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon. One suspect was also shot while three suspects were taken into custody. One person, however, is on the run.
IMPD officers were called around 2 p.m. to the intersection of N. White River Pkwy E. Drive and Sheffield Avenue. Minutes later, emergency responders were called to the intersection of 16th Street and Lafayette Road. They were pursuing a suspect who had stolen a vehicle.
“The IMPD North District Officer, in a fully marked car, activated his emergency lights to stop the vehicle. A total of four suspects were in the vehicle and one male passenger immediately ran from the vehicle,” said IMPD Assistant Chief Michael Wolley.
Wolley said the officer tried to take the driver into custody and had him seated on the ground.
“As this was happening, two additional passengers exited the vehicle. One of those passengers walked around to the front of the vehicle and began firing in the direction of the officer. The IMPD Officer was struck by gunfire at least three times. The officer returned fire, resulting in an officer-involved shooting,” said Wolley.
The officer used a tourniquet on his wounds. He was eventually taken to a hospital in stable condition. A gun was also recovered at the scene.
“Officers also rendered aid to the suspect who was shot. A total of three suspects were taken into custody. Detectives believe that the shooter is in custody at the hospital. One suspect is still outstanding,” said Wolley.
IMPD Chief Chris Bailey says he is tired of seeing his officers get attacked by people not following the law.
“The attack that we saw today is the second attack that we saw in less than a week by a dangerous person armed with a weapon and the intent to kill,” said Bailey.
The officer who was shot is a four-year veteran on the force. He has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in situations like this.
Today’s is the fourth IMPD police shooting of 2025, the second this month. Of the three previously, two suspects died, including the one on July 24, and another was injured. IMPD had 17 police action shootings in 2024.
