MUNCIE, Ind.–A 9-year-old boy died in a fire at his family’s home in Muncie this morning.

Investigators say the fire started at about 3:45. Neighbors told firefighters a boy lived in the home, but they weren’t sure if he was home. They looked for him, but then a loft in the home collapsed, so they evacuated.

The boy’s mother got there at about 4:45 and said her child was in there. Fire crews eventually found the boy on the second-story loft which had collapsed into the kitchen.

City police captain Joe Todd told the Muncie Star Press the father was at work and the mother had left to do laundry at a family member’s home when the fire began.

The family cat was also killed.

Firefighters are trying to figure out what caused the fire.

The boy has been identified as Vincent Gibbons. He was a student at South View Elementary School.
