INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In an ongoing effort to stem the tide of gun violence plaguing the city, Indianapolis is seeing a rise in “peace pop-up” events created by Indy Peace– this is designed to bring violence prevention directly to the neighborhoods most affected.

These community-led initiatives, which aim to foster dialogue, provide resources, and empower residents to become active participants in creating safer streets.

These informal gatherings, often held in local parks and community spaces, serve as crucial touchpoints between city officials, violence intervention teams, and the very neighbors grappling with the devastating impact of gun violence. They offer an opportunity for open discussion, allowing residents to voice their concerns, share their experiences, and learn about tangible ways they can contribute to peace building efforts.

On Tuesday in Wes Montgomery, Indy Peace set up a pop-up next to a crowd of people watching and playing basketball. Indy Peace said this ZIP code, 46218, leads in the number of homicides. It’s also leads in nonfatal shootings according to WISH-TV.

WISH-TV also spoke with resident Virgil Harris, who has been living in the area for 10 years. “You see all the guys out here playing basketball. This is where it starts. This is where you show a kid, ‘Hey, you’re safe.’ This is a safe heaven for our boys out here.”

The recent shootings shook Harris and many other people in the community. “I’m scared; not just scared, worried. You know, I’ve got kids and I don’t want my kids to be next.”

The peace pop-ups serve as a platform to bridge this gap, connecting residents with vital resources, showcasing successful prevention strategies, and fostering a sense of collective responsibility for public safety.
