IMPD: 2 Dead, Multiple Injured in Downtown Indianapolis Shooting

INDIANAPOLIS — Two people are dead and at least four others are injured from a shooting in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday morning.
IMPD officers responded to the shooting at around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of South Illinois Street and West Washington Street. While tending to a separate disturbance about half a block away, officers heard gunshots and ran to the scene.
IMPD said a 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. A 15-year-old boy later died at a hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released.
Six victims in total were transported to area hospitals. A seventh victim took themselves to Eskanazi hospital. The ages of those shot were 15, 16, 17, 19 and 21.
IMPD said they also recovered several firearms at the scene. It’s unclear if those weapons were the ones used in the shooting.
Chief Chris Bailey spoke at the scene. He said to have such violence continue to happen downtown and for it to happen over a holiday weekend is infuriating.
“Thousands of people came downtown tonight, enjoyed the fireworks and went home. Thousands more chose to come down here and all night cause trouble,” Chief Bailey said.
He added that seven people were detained near the shooting. Some of them are kids.
“I don’t know how many times I have to say it. We are not your children’s keepers. You are. Parents and guardians have got to step up,” Bailey said. “A kid is dead tonight.”
Bailey said IMPD officers made more than 20 overnight arrests.
“I’m not sure anymore what it’s going to take for some in our community to wake up,” Bailey said. “I’m tired of it.”
