Gov. Braun Signs Public Safety Bills from House Republicans

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana House Republicans had public safety as on of their top priorities this legislative session.
Gov. Mike Braun recently signed a few bills into law relating to public safety including House Enrolled Act 1232. State Rep. Ethan Lawson (R-Greenfield) co-authored the bill and said it will ensure that critical data is shared more efficiently to keep law enforcement officers and the public safer.
“In a situation where certain decisions can save lives, access to the most current information is crucial for our officers,” Rep. Lawson said. “This law will make important updates to improve the reliability of the system so that agencies can better share information and respond to threats more effectively.”
House Enrolled Act 1232 will help officers across the state get the most accurate and up-to-date information while protecting fellow Hoosiers and first responders.
Lawson also thanked Hancock County Sheriff Brad Burkhart for testifying at the statehouse in support of the new law.
Gov. Braun also signed into law House Enrolled Act 1014. State Rep. Alex Zimmerman of North Vernon authored the bill to do what he says is provide some “common-sense solutions” for public safety.
“This new law is about protecting Hoosiers,” said Rep. Zimmerman. “It cracks down on drug dealers and repeat offenders, strengthens penalties for individuals who commit crimes while in the country illegally and keeps obscene performances out of taxpayer-funded spaces.”
Another bill signed by Braun was Senate Enrolled Act 324. It’s goal is to increase the penalties for fentanyl-related crimes. Courts will be instructed to consider requiring certain individuals charged with a crime of domestic violence to wear a monitoring device as a condition of bail.
These new laws are set to go into effect on July 1.
