WASHINGTON — America must always be thinking one step ahead of the competition, said U.S. Sen. Todd Young, of Indiana, as he was hosted by Chris Miller of the American Enterprise Institute in Washington this week for a discussion on national security.

“We do need talent. We need to send an unambiguous policy message that we are optimizing our system of legal immigration to get the most talent,” said Young.

His focus lately has been on building back America’s shipbuilding prowess since China has a gigantic edge as far as global shipping of products.

Young said it is necessary that the U.S. as a country, relearn shipbuilding skills.

“We need capital. We need expertise. Where can we find it?” he asked. “South Korea and Japan are among the most talented and experienced shipbuilders in the world. We should be partnering with them.”

Young said it’s necessary to build relationships to attract talent here, people who can be assets in our effort to reclaim a top place in shipbuilding and subsequently in shipping products.

“If we want America to be first we need friends who are prepared to teach us how to build ships again, who can be trusted suppliers of ship components.”

Young is co-sponsor of legislation to revitalize shipyards across the country, many of which have fallen into disrepair and are no longer capable of producing.
