HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind — Bond was set at $50,000 Monday for 18-year-old Trey Williams, the driver charged in the March crash that killed Mason Alexander, a standout football player from Hamilton Southeastern High School.

Williams faces a felony count of reckless homicide and two misdemeanors: reckless driving causing injury and having a fake ID. A judge rejected a proposed $10,000 bond and also barred Williams from driving while out on bond.

Prosecutor Joshua Kocher said the key concern was making sure Williams surrendered his license: “The court thought it should be higher, and we were fine with that.”

Alexander died after the BMW he was in crashed into a tree and caught fire while trying to pass another car on Florida Road. Williams, then 17, was behind the wheel. He’s now being tried as an adult.

Alexander’s uncle, Ravhy Murray, spoke after court: “Mason had a bright future. It took less than five minutes to wipe all that away.”

Murray said his family prays for Williams and acknowledged, “There are no winners in a case like this.”

Alexander’s family is pushing for more conversations at home about reckless driving to help prevent future tragedies.
