NOBLESVILLE, Ind –– A Hamilton County judge ruled that Trey Williams, a teenager, will be tried as an adult for a crash that killed 18-year-old Mason Alexander.

Alexander was a football player at Hamilton Southeastern High School and had committed to play at the University of Pittsburgh. He died March 1 when the BMW he was riding in swerved, hit a tree, and caught fire. Police say Williams was driving.

Williams, who was 17 at the time of the crash, turned 18 in April and was arrested May 1. He faces charges including reckless homicide, reckless driving, and using fake government ID. Prosecutors filed to move the case to adult court, where these charges would apply.

Mason Alexander’s family asked for the case to be handled in adult court. His uncle said the crash didn’t have to happen and wants Williams held accountable.

Williams’ defense says he struggles with fear and anxiety but is not a threat to others. Prosecutors say he has shown no remorse and won’t get the help or consequences he needs in juvenile court.

His first hearing in adult court is scheduled for Monday, June 2.
