INDIANAPOLIS — FBI Indianapolis announced that Timothy O’Malley has been named as the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI’s Indianapolis Field Office.

O’Malley is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend where he earned a BBA. He also earned a JD from DePaul University.

Most recently, O’Malley was Chief of the Forensic Response Section at FBI Headquarters, where he served since October 2023.

SAC O’Malley credits his experience and the relationships he’s built with people over time to him ending up in this vital role in Indianapolis.

“A big factor in why I was selected for this position is my understanding and my appreciation for partnerships and collaboration across law enforcement entities,” O’Malley told WIBC. “What it takes to be a good investigator is to be someone who can interact well with people and be a good listener.”

O’Malley began his career with the FBI on March 11, 2001, as a special agent first assigned to the Honolulu Field Office. While in Honolulu, O’Malley worked on the Hawaii HIDTA Task Force and served as a member of the Honolulu SWAT Team.

O’Malley also has a history of work overseas. In 2010, he was promoted to Legal Bucharest and had territorial responsibility for Romania, Hungary, and the Republic of Moldova. He also spent a period of time in Sydney, Australia starting in 2015.

“Those jobs are unique,” he said. “You’re working in an embassy or a diplomatic mission there and you’re working with partners.”

Prior to joining the FBI, O’Malley worked for the United States Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C., and Chicago. He eventually made stops too in Cincinnati, OH, and Columbia, SC in various roles.

When it comes to Indianapolis, O’Malley recognized some unique aspects of the city that he plans to address as SAC. He wants limit crime and keep the area as safe as possible.

“Unfortunately, Indianapolis does have a violent crime problem and it’s something that as part of my leadership here will be front and center,” O’Malley said. “It’s essential for the FBI to have a role in making our communities safer to live in and violent crime eats at the core of our communities.”

There are other issues in Indianapolis too. As a major-metropolitan area, the city has plenty of industry, tourism and corporate headquarters located here. O’Malley said they will keep their eyes on cyber and white-collar crimes as well as international terrorism threats.

“Under my leadership, the focus will definitely be on violent crime, making our communities safer and having that immediate impact, but the FBI and the Indianapolis division is not going to lose focus on some of the other issues that we’ve traditionally been strong in,” O’Malley added.
