STATEWIDE — It is expected that more than 45 million people in the U.S. will travel at least 50 miles from their homes between Tuesday and next Monday, especially over the Memorial Day weekend. The vast majority of these travelers are expected to drive, says auto club organization American Automobile Association (AAA).

The holiday surpasses the previous record for domestic travel, which was established 20 years ago.

AAA officials say the experts responsible for generating this travel forecast initially had some uncertainty. They were unsure whether concerns about the economy would lead to fewer U.S. residents making plans for trips for the unofficial start of summer, but it does not seem the case.

AAA reported around 87% of people traveling for Memorial Day are driving to their destinations, just like last year. Officials say you can leave whenever you want, and you can pack as much as you want in the car.

Officials say top searches for getaways include New York, Miami, and Las Vegas.
