Indiana Democrat Andre Carson Discusses President’s Immigration Policies
INDIANAPOLIS–One of Indiana’s Democratic representatives says he believes immigrants are being treated unfairly and Tuesday hosted a webinar he said he hoped would provide help to people who are being affected by the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
“We will need everyone’s voice, the voice of the people to defeat the very extremist and inhumane policies,” said Congressman Andre Carson, who represents parts of Indianapolis in Washington.
The webinar featured several attorneys experienced in immigration law, with updates on what the courts are saying.
Carson said he believes the administration is defying the law and courts and depriving people of due process.
“The courts have demanded…the Trump administration follow the law. The administration is defying court orders and continuing with illegal actions. But, we will not back down,” said Carson.
Part of Tuesday’s webinar was to inform people of potential consequences of taking the administration up on its invitation to leave voluntarily, which comes with cash and a promise that people who do so will have a shot at legal re-entry.
One of the attorneys featured in the webinar said she believes leaving actually makes it tougher to get back in.
Carson said he is taking action in his role as a lawmaker.
“I’m co-sponsoring the Neighbors Not Enemies Act to repeal the law the Trump administration is effectively using for mass deportation,” he said.
Carson also said he is helping fight the deportations in court.
