Just Say “No” Indiana Republicans

Just say “No” Indiana Republicans. Governor Mike Braun and Republicans in the state of Indiana need to take a step back and ask themselves what it is they actually do here. The answer to bad policy needs to be “no”
Good to be with you I. I caught an op-ed from Danny Lopez, over at the IBJ. I like Danny Lopez. I think he’s an unbelievably smart guy. I think when IndyStar so-called reporters went after him for engaging an honest conversation about boys are not girls and girls are not boys. I found that to be disgusting. And said so I don’t usually get involved in some of these races. It was a pleasure to do so. Danny Lopez deserved the support. I was happy to give it. And I argue that I would do it again. I disagree vehemently and aggressively with his decision to vote for this budget. And I would say, uh. To Danny without any question, that he was wrong. As I would say to any Republican, wrong. And the argument that the Lieutenant Governor gave on WIBC of well, you don’t vote for it, and you shut down the government and people don’t get checks. That is a progressive argument. And it fails on its face because sometimes the answer is no, no matter what. It doesn’t seem to me that the Lieutenant governor was willing to engage that conversation or willing to accept that idea that he was engaging in a progressive argument and that he should really rethink his position. Same thing is true for Republicans in the General Assembly. And I bring up Danny Lopez because he wrote an op-ed. Few days ago in the IBJ winning formula for state is to stay open for business. I don’t disagree with the premise at all. That there are opportunities that have been created in the state of Indiana because of good governance, because actual Republicans have not had conservative governance going back to Mitch Daniels, which we consider as this pivotal moment and accurately so. We are open for business. We should be. We should be growing. I’ve argued we need more than just the biotech and the BioMed. We need to be growing in the entertainment side. We need to be growing in the art side. And throughout the state, from Gary to Evansville to Jeffersonville, we need to be all over it. In all of these places, I wholeheartedly, wholeheartedly agree. We need to be thinking about things that work for all Hoosiers. That’s why I like Ivy Tech so much. And I know they just picked up a new president who comes from academia, so I’m not really sure how that’s gonna play out, but let’s see what happens. But you can’t make the argument that we should be open for business. And then tell Hoosiers, oops, our prediction was wrong, now we increase your taxes on specific businesses like, for example, yes, something near and dear to my heart: the cigar industry. You don’t get to do that. If you want to argue that Hoosiers need to make up a shortfall, you make that argument and you place it on everybody. You don’t go targeting and then claim be open for business. You can’t make that argument. It is not sound. We should be open for business unless you’re a cigar lounge. In which case, screw you. Unless you’re a bar, unless you’re a restaurant, unless you’re a hotel, unless you’re a retail shop and we go on down the line. You can’t make that argument. It’s not that I disagree with the idea. That we have done good things. We should continue to do good things and smart things and vibrant things and, yes, bold decisions and bold choices. But it is an impossible argument to make when you then pass a budget that targets an industry for your failures to misunderstand what the revenue projections were.
