DEA Reacts After Fentanyl Overdose at Perry Meridian High

INDIANAPOLIS — A student at Meridian High in Perry Township overdosed on fentanyl Tuesday and was revived with Narcan.
Michael Gannon, Assistant Special Agent in Charge of U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration-Indianapolis says kids should assume every pill or powder on the street could contain fentanyl.
“That’s the scary part, when it comes to fentanyl, there’s no second chance,” Gannon said. “It can be mixed into a lot of different drugs.”
School police and staff gave the student Narcan twice, helping them regain consciousness before medics arrived. The student was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Gannon says it’s uncommon for THC vapes to contain fentanyl, but warns drug dealers often find new ways to cut it in. He says a toxicology report will give a clearer picture.
“Drugs can change hands five, six, even seven times—and each time, a dealer can add whatever they want,” he said.
Gannon is not directly involved in the Perry Township case.
