HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind.–Drivers, plan accordingly. I-70 construction has resumed in Hancock County, promising big changes for morning drivers who commute from Greenfield to Indianapolis. Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the exit ramp from westbound I-70 to S.R. 9 closed, as well as the entrance ramp from S.R. 9 to WB-70. The westbound direction has also entered into a tricky five-mile crossover pattern beginning near the Greenfield rest area that places both directions of I-70 on the eastbound side.

Drivers should allow extra time this morning to avoid rushing into the construction zone.

The entrance ramp from S.R. 9 will reopen in 70 days, or around early June. The exit ramp to S.R. 9 is scheduled for a 90-day closure, putting the reopening date sometime in the middle of June. The entire makeover of I-70 in is expected to be finished in October.

Morning commuters will be mostly affected, as the ramp closures produce a nearly twenty-mile stretch of interstate without an exit from S.R. 109 (Knightstown) to Mt. Comfort Rd. Drivers can instead utilize the ramp systems at Mt. Comfort Rd. and S.R. 109 for access to WB-70. Those wishing to skip the imminent delays can use U.S. 40 as an east/west reroute.

“We’re making improvements to I-70 through Indiana, section by section. Projects are in various stages,” says Natalie Garrett, Communications Director at INDOT. I-70 is also being renovated in the Richmond area, with a construction zone that stretches from the Ohio state line to west of Cambridge City.
