DES MOINES — The Pentagon has confirmed that rockets fired by Iranian based militias in Iraq hit the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Sunday night.

The rocket attacks come just weeks after the embassy was nearly overrun by Iraqi protesters against the presence of American troops in the Middle East and subsequent missile attacks by Iran on U.S military targets in Iraq. So far, it appears no one was injured or killed in these most recent attacks.

Democrat presidential candidate and former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg is in Des Moines, Iowa as we are just a week away from the Iowa Caucuses. He told Fox News in a town hall how he would handle the situation.

“First we have to take steps to make sure U.S. personnel are safe,” Buttigieg said. “And we have to look at a proportional response or preventative actions to make sure this can’t happen again. These are not the kinds of conflict we were used to from a decade or generation ago.”

Buttigieg also used the opportunity to explain why he feels President Donald Trump is unqualified to handle these situations.

“We’re talking about somebody, who as the privileged son of a multi-millionaire, faked an injury in order to avoid serving,” he said. “He goes on to become president and minimizes the real injuries of those who did serve.”

Buttigieg refers to when Trump told the New York Times that he was deemed unfit for military service in the Vietnam War because of “heel spurs.”

“This is exactly why someone like Donald Trump has no business being in the Situation Room,” said Buttigieg. “Because you have to be able to make these decisions with a perspective of those who have their lives on the line.”

The Iowa Caucuses are February 3rd.
