Governor Braun won on a mandate of bringing down Property Taxes for cash strapped Hoosiers.

Yet, not unexpectedly, the municipalities cried poor, and the Republican led Senate Committee gutted Property Tax Reform Senate Bill 1.

Many were furious about the betrayal they felt from “lower tax” Republicans. Tony Katz reached out to Indiana mayors to air their side of the argument.

Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam accepted Tony’s invitation to explain her side.

Tony Katz:

Now I’ve stated before and without any equivocation that I oppose all property taxes. If you own your house, you own your house. To say you own it, but actually the state owns it if you don’t give them money, is not ownership. That is certainly, I think, a rational course and we can argue a philosophical. And isn’t the conversation for what we’re dealing with now because property taxes are not going away, We’re discussing whether or not they should be increasing at the levels they are.  The mayor of Carmel, IN Sue Finkam joins me right now. I put out the call. I want to hear mayors discussing what’s going on with property taxes, where they are as they’re testifying regarding Senate Bill 1, this idea of reducing property taxes and what we hear about is the effect it will have on cities. Are there other ways that cities can go about surviving? Can they engage in cuts? How does this work? I put out the call. Mayor Finkam was the first respondent. And Mayor, good, good to have you with us. Uh, let let’s start with the basics because you did testify regarding Senate bill 1. Do you favor the capping or reduction of property taxes in the state of Indiana?

Sue Finkam:

First, let me say unequivocally, I support targeted and balanced tax reform. All mayors do so. And to your point about property tax elimination, if that’s what the conversation was going to be about, I’d be all in, except that’s not what the governor and the General Assembly of put forth. So now we work together to make the proposal.
