STATEWIDE–There is what’s called a three-tiered system in responding to a mental health crisis.
Stephanie Anderson, Chief Operating Officer of Mental Health America Indiana, breaks them down.
“One is a place to call. So that’s our 988-crisis hotline. It’s been very successful in its implementation in the state,” said Anderson. “We’re in the Top 10 of all states in terms of implementation, call-answer rates, and response times. About 80% of people get their needs met just by calling into that 988-crisis line.”
The next step is the response.
“So those are our crisis response teams, which are getting our police districts ready to respond to someone in a mental health crisis when that’s needed. Employing what are called crisis response teams. These are clinician led response teams that can support an emergency that’s related to mental health,” said Anderson.
The third aspect is finding a place to go.
“This is about comprehensive solutions to what we really have as a workforce issue right now so that folks can get in for their needed services and not be put on a long waiting list,” said Anderson.
Anderson is among several leaders who have been at the Statehouse during this legislative session urging lawmakers to make sure that enough mental health funding is secured to address the needs of Hoosiers who are battling a mental health crisis.
