STATEHOUSE — If passed into law, a proposed House Bill could help promote more affordable housing in the Hoosier state.
House Bill 1005 is intended to “bolster” the Residential Housing Infrastructure Assistance Program, which helps develop housing in local communities by providing loans for necessary projects like sanitary sewer systems.
It could also allow “third-party” professionals to complete inspections and other essential tasks, in order to expedite the permitting process, thereby reducing bureaucratic costs. About $82 million has already been used to help “add over 3,000 housing units” across Indiana.
State Representative Doug Miller says, “Expanding housing access will alleviate pressure in the market and help more Hoosiers become homeowners.” He notes that about half of Indiana’s home renters are “cost burdened.”
It now heads to the Senate. Learn more at iga.in.gov.
