Will The IMPD Assist Or Impede ICE If Asked?
Shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey confirmed that the department “Does Not have Authority to Enforce Federal Immigration Laws“. On January 28th, Governor Mike Braun signed an Executive Order that Indiana will cooperate with ICE in enforcing immigration law.
Tony Katz the next day asked on air if the Chief Bailey and the IMPD if they would assist ICE if asked.

No comment came from IMPD, so we here at Tony Katz and the Morning News reached out to the Chief and IMPD directly if they would cooperate if ICE asked them to after the President’s and Governor’s Executive Orders.
Tony Katz:
The question that we asked to the chief, and we sent the e-mail was “if you are asked now that Mike Braun, the governor, has signed the executive order saying that there will be assistance to federal officials regarding immigration. If asked, will you assist?” We asked this question to the IMPD. Senator Banks said that he’s considering pulling federal grants for the IMPD and any law enforcement that blocks federal immigration sweeps.
Now understand what Banks is saying, because I did check in… is that if they (IMPD) were to be proactive… in refusing cooperation or to block federal law enforcement, then Senator Banks should be in favor of pulling any federal grants that go to IMPD. The question, of course, is whether or not they will assist. The response that we have received, and it was not from the Chief, the response we received was nothing has changed. “We do not have the authority to enforce federal immigration laws.” With all due respect, IMPD, that is not what I asked. And I would take it a step further. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. You know, that’s not what I asked, and I don’t appreciate your response… as if somehow that answers the question. I demand better, not I’m not asking for better, I demand better.
