INDIANAPOLIS — The day will be cloudy with scattered showers this afternoon, but light rain will taper off tonight.

Milder temperatures are coming as the jet stream shifts, bringing less cold air into the state over the next week.

“There hasn’t been any intrusion of colder air expected to come into the Ohio Valley as we saw during much of January,” said Jason Puma, forecaster at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. “Without those cold air intrusions, much milder Pacific air is arriving into the Ohio Valley.”

As a result, Puma says temperatures will feel warmer than usual through much of next week.

“On Saturday, our high temperature will be around 42,” he said. “On Sunday, we’ll reach about 55. Normally, we see highs in the upper 30s in January and early February.”

While milder weather is expected, colder temperatures could return in the coming weeks. Puma did not rule out another snowstorm before winter ends.

“To try and speculate that winter is over at this point would be a little foolhardy,” he added.
