Car Slides onto Ice, Sinks in White River

INDIANAPOLIS — A car slid onto the ice and plunged into the White River early Monday near Riverside Park, but no injuries were reported.

Police received a call about the car on the ice around 7:00 a.m. Officers confirmed no one was inside, and the Indianapolis Fire Department dive team, led by Commander Bryan Fleck, was dispatched.

The dive team attempted to recover the sinking SUV, but dangerous conditions in the river forced them to halt the effort.

“The ice is too thick, the water is too deep, and it’s too risky for our crews,” Fleck said.

Crews will wait until the ice thaws to safely retrieve the vehicle.

Fleck urged people to stay off the ice. “Ice in Indiana is unpredictable and dangerous. No ice is safe ice in Indianapolis,” he said
