FRANKFORT, Ind. — A deer named Huron, found injured last week at a central Indiana petting zoo, has died.

“I’ve had multiple contacts with him,” said Mayor Judy Sheets. “We tried different medications, different treatments, and different diagnostic tests, but he was not able to survive.”

Zookeepers at Frankfort’s TPA Park Aviary & Petting Zoo previously reported that two chickens and another deer were found dead in a barn. During routine checks last Thursday, they discovered Huron, who appeared distressed.

Huron was taken to Purdue University Veterinary Hospital for treatment but didn’t make it. Mayor Sheets called the loss heartbreaking. “We were all hopeful for a positive outcome for Huron. I can’t thank the Purdue vets enough,” she said.

Purdue is conducting autopsies on the deer and chickens to determine the cause of death.

The Frankfort Police Department is reviewing surveillance footage from the zoo for any clues, and both the USDA and the Department of Natural Resources are investigating the situation.
