Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Indianapolis predict that central Indiana could see over 10 inches of snow beginning Sunday as a winter storm approaches.

“We are pretty confident that we will at least see 6 inches and amounts to be potentially close to 10 and maybe even low double digits on the high end,” said Andrew White, a meteorologist with NWS Indianapolis.

If Indianapolis experiences 10 inches of snow, it will be the first time in six years the city has seen that amount of snow in one period.

“So not normal for the Indianapolis area,” White said.

Last winter Indianapolis saw 8.2 inches of snow and the year before that 10 inches.

“So we definitely have the potential in one event to see more than we had in the entire last two years,” White said.

The incoming storm could also make roads unsafe to travel and experts advise people to stay off the roads when possible. If you must drive, they advise taking a storm kit that includes tire chains, booster cables, flashlights, shovel, blankets, water, a first aid kit and other items that would help you survive if stranded.

“Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous,” a winter storm watch warns.
