WASHINGTON—President Joe Biden has blocked Nippon Steel’s $15 billion bid to acquire U.S. Steel. This decision aims to protect jobs, union agreements, and national security while preserving domestic control over a critical industry.

Gary, Indiana, home to U.S. Steel’s largest mill, stands to benefit as the mill remains under American ownership. The move safeguards local jobs and reinforces the steel industry’s role in national infrastructure efforts, supporting communities like Gary that depend on steel manufacturing.

“It is important that we maintain strong American steel companies powered by American steelworkers,” Biden said in March, highlighting U.S. Steel’s iconic role in American manufacturing.

President-elect Donald Trump also opposed the acquisition, vowing to block the deal and support U.S. Steel’s growth with tax incentives and tariffs. Steelworkers’ union President David McCall welcomed the rejection, calling it an opportunity to focus on the company’s future.
